Ted Church was an A.A. councilor, though he had never taken a drink himself. He lived in the world of alkies and junkies in central Detroit in an abandoned church rectory. The house was full of things he had reclaimed, abandoned things mostly, though Ted believed that abandoned things can be reclaimed through spiritual connections. So Ted gave them to people, usually at a moment of revelation that he had provoked. Ted lived the 12 steps in a Zen Master-like way.

A few years after his wife died, Ted married a girl almost forty years his junior. The film spends a weekend with them, mostly in their kitchen, and learns about reclamation and salvation.
