Reservation 3 Fall: Ancient Skeletons, Modern Diversions - DVD

$12.95

This cinema verité series follows a year in the life of a First Nations reserve in the interior of British Columbia.  Eleven intermarried families form the population of the 550 Shuswap at Alkali Lake. Struggling under the paternalistic system devised by the Canadian Government, they have never signed a treaty formalizing their existence and are forced to live like interlopers on their own land.  Ill-equipped for the modern word, the reserve is both their prison and their sanctuary?and perhaps, the best hope for the preservation of their culture.

The filming follows 14 major characters, revealing the complexity of reserve life with its vast web of community, its contradictions, its nepotism, its feuds, its lingering malaise of long unspoken sexual abuse, but, ultimately, its deep well of spirituality.

Part 3.
Fall: Ancient Skeletons and Modern Diversions
The rent insurrection and housing arrears has precipitated a full blown financial crisis. Chief Andy is in despair as devastating layoffs loom with all departments.  Norma joins the band leaders on a housing committee formed to take drastic action. But a white knight, a consultant from the Yukon named Shakir Alwarid, appears, holding out the promise of financial deals with the logging companies and their suppliers. Dave dreams of untold wealth for the people. Megga?s son, Mike, the AIDS patient, moves home from Vancouver for good.  An elder addresses the senior class about life lessons but no one listens except the teacher. Debbie comes back to a welcome home party after a hysterectomy and radiation treatment. The band signs a deal with the government and the RCMP allowing old, undisclosed, crimes among band members to be dealt with in healing circles. Not everyone is happy about this and one band councilor resigns and privately threatens suicide. Mardy and her friends dress up for the Halloween party where the costumes hide identities but reveal lurking monsters. Megga reads a poem she wrote about being the mother of a child dying of AIDS.
